Puerto Rican Makes History as First Victoria’s Secret Model With Down Syndrome

A Puerto Rican woman has become the first-ever Victoria’s Secret model with Down Syndrome.

Twenty-four-year-old Sofía Jirau has made history after she appeared in Victoria’s Secret “Love Cloud” launch…

“One day I dreamed it, I worked on it and today it is a dream come true,” she wrote on Instagram about being part of the new collection. “I can finally tell you my big secret… I am the first Victoria’s Secret model with Down Syndrome!”

This marks an important day for the brand too, who have stated they want to create a more inclusive space, and represent diversity with their garments.

But this isn’t Jirau’s first time modeling, she made her debut in the modeling world 2 years ago at New York Fashion Week, and has been on the up ever since.

“Modeling in the United States was the beginning of conquering the dream I have had since an early age: to model on the most important runways in the world,” the site states.

“For me, the most important thing about fulfilling my dreams is to show people around the world that there are no limits and to inspire them to pursue their own dreams.”

And Jirau has received endless support from everyone who hears about her achievements. One social media user wrote: “Kudos to her. She is breaking boundaries. She seems to love it and it makes her happy. Thats what matters.”

Another wrote an emotional message about their own experience: “My brother has Down’s Syndrome and is 47 years old. My wish since my brother was a boy & was subjected to a lot of cruel bullying by adults & kids (throughout the ’80s), was to see the day when individuals with intellectual disabilities were celebrated in print, TV, & film mediums. This woman is absolutely beautiful. I’m so happy this day has come.”

A third commented: “How beautiful! We are all different and for this reason, we are beautiful in different ways! She looks amazing!!!”

“Love Cloud Collection is a major moment in the brand’s evolution,” creative director, Raúl Martinez, said about the new move.

“From the cast of incredible women that bring the collection to life, to the incredible inclusive spirit on set, this campaign is an important part of the new Victoria’s Secret standard we are creating.”

How amazing!
